Gippsland cultivates Flower Show visitors

Latrobe City’s new Creative Gippsland Cultural Tourism brochure was released at the recently held Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

By City of Latrobe - 22nd April 2005 - Back to News

The brochure showcases and celebrates the area’s artists, galleries, studios, public art sites, performing arts venues, and heritage and tourism destinations.

Latrobe City’s Arts Innovation Facilitator, Lynette Raven, said that showcasing the brochures at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show had been a huge success.

"We received fantastic positive feedback from locals, Melburnians and international visitors. The full suite of Creative Gippsland brochures from the participating councils at East Gippsland/Wellington, South Gippsland, Baw Baw and Latrobe were displayed together at a purpose built stand. This enabled visitors to view Gippsland in its cultural entirety as well as in smaller regions," Ms Raven added.

"The brochure certainly highlights the number of arts, culture and heritage attractions that are located in the municipality and in Gippsland. Judging by the reception the brochure received from the flower show audience, we hope to draw in tourists from all over Victoria, interstate and overseas to sample a little of what we have to offer here," Ms Raven said.

"The brochure also highlights particular restaurants, cafes and accommodation sites that support and promote the arts. With a new image and feel, the brochure is brighter and more eye-catching, successfully promoting the many cultural tourism destinations here in Latrobe City," Ms Raven said.

"As well as listing all the major well-known arts and cultural venues in the municipality such as the Latrobe Regional Gallery, arc Yinnar and the Gippsland Heritage Park, other new businesses and emerging artists are highlighted.

"For example, Groovy Tuesday’s Café in Moe showcases local artists; Jumbuck Cottage Bed and Breakfast at Yinnar is run by artists and writer in residence Trisha Dennis; Yakuna Dreaming Indigenous artists create screenprinted items such as t-shirts, bookmarks and boomerangs. Over 30 individuals and or businesses participated in the Latrobe City brochure," Ms Raven added.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that Creative Gippsland was an award winning initiative of six of the seven Gippsland municipalities.

"This initiative has resulted in the tourism and arts and culture sectors working cooperatively across local government boundaries to foster regional development and promote Gippsland to new visitors," Cr Lougheed concluded.

Brochures are now available from all major tourism centres including the Latrobe Visitor Information Centre in Traralgon and Latrobe Regional Gallery.
