Council Honours Volunteers

Bass Coast Shire Council has formally thanked its volunteers at a morning tea as part of National Volunteer Week.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr John Duscher, said Council volunteers help out in a number of areas including Visitor Information Centres, Committees of Management and community transport.

"There are 51 active volunteers who regularly work between four and eight hours a week at the Visitor Information Centres," said Cr Duscher.

"Our volunteers have accumulated an incredible 266 years of service between them – what an amazing gift to our community and visitors!"

According to Council’s Economic Development Manager, Peter Francis, this has been the busiest year ever in the Bass Coast Visitor Information Centres

"Our volunteers are the life blood of our centres – they know everything there is to know about the local communities and tourist activities," said Mr Francis.

"This year in National Volunteer Week we also celebrated the contribution of June Beattie, who has been a volunteer at the Wonthaggi Visitor Information Centre for a remarkable 20 years."

Council works with committees of management to provide recreation and leisure facilities to communities. Council’s Arts and Leisure Coordinator, Jenny Churchill, said the commitment and dedication of those who put their hand up to be part of these committees should be acknowledged.

"These people really deserve a pat on the back from their communities too," said Ms Churchill. "As without them, there would be no facilities."

"Our committees are always looking for volunteers to help – this is a great way to give back to your community."

Through Council’s Home and Community Care program volunteers provide community transport and the planned activity group on Phillip Island.

Council’s Community Services Manager, Liz Wright, said these programs helped out residents in need.

"The Bass Coast Community Bus is driven by volunteers and takes clients out to do their shopping, run errands and connect with society. And again, without our volunteers this is a service that we just simply couldn’t provide," said Ms Wright.

Council provides a welcoming and supportive environment for volunteers to work and there is always room for more to join. For further information about volunteering at Council, the Visitor Information Centres or for a committee of management, contact Council on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
