The event was also attended by the young people’s families and friends; Latrobe City Councillors Lisa Price, Sharon Gibson and Sandy Kam, and senior members of Latrobe City staff, school principals and representatives of the local agencies.

Highlights for the year were the success of the Youth Info Card, the Sister Cities Youth Conference in Toowoomba, the Halogen 10,000 ideas Youth Conference, Parliament House trip, Melbourne University project on Youth Spaces in Regional Victoria and the Latrobe Community Health Service project on online gambling.

The Youth Council also worked with the Latrobe City Council on the Draft Library Plan, the Moe Revitalisation Project and the Morwell Skate Park Design.

The busy program of events for the 2011 Youth Leadership Program included Mental Health Awareness Day, visits to the Gippsland Water factory and the Australian Paper Mill as well as the experience ‘Day in the life of a Uni Student’ with Monash University Gippsland.

Latrobe City’s outgoing Youth Mayor, Casey McMillan, said the aim of both programs was not only to improve on skills such as leadership, networking and public speaking, but to be a voice for local youth.

"I have been in Youth Council for two years and during that time it has given me the opportunity to communicate my ideas affecting young people in the local area with Latrobe City Council. Youth Council has allowed me to make new friends and develop my leadership skills and attend various youth conference and forums," Casey said.

Jerome Johnson Latrobe City Deputy Youth Mayor added that the opportunities to work with various agencies, the Latrobe City Council and to visit businesses proved beneficial.

"Youth Council has allowed me to develop new skills and to connect to other like-minded young people within the community. Youth Council has given me the opportunity to work with Latrobe City staff, Councillors, and local MPs on various projects. It has been a very memorable year," Jerome concluded.
