History of the museum

This huge collection housed inside the old Trafalgar Butter Factory will take you through a detailed history of this iconic Australian brand, including some very rare and customised vehicles, immaculate Monaros, concept cars that never quite made it to production, all the way up to the very last modern Holden to roll off the line in Australia - all meticulously labelled with historic information.

In 2025, the Trafalgar Holden Museum added another wing to the exhibition building, with a brand new showroom, a mezzanine floor gallery and 24 display booths. The obsession continues beyond the factory floor to the rest of the buildings and exhibitions out the back, extending your experience of the ultimate discovery at the Trafalgar Holden Museum.

Beyond the cars

Even if you are not a car fanatic, you will be surprised at just how much you’ll learn from the many exhibits at the Trafalgar Holden Museum, well beyond the impact this manufacturing giant had on the Australian car industry.

The stories here go right back to the company’s beginnings as a saddlery maker in 1859, and the museum is packed with all kinds of memorabilia, including fantastic examples of military items chronicling Holden's crucial role in manufacturing during war times. It is obvious to anyone entering that there is passion and love behind this extensive collection.

Celebrating Holden history

Late founder Neil Joiner opened the Trafalgar Holden Museum in 2014 to house his growing collection of heritage Holdens. Wanting to showcase the entire history of Holden, not just the cars, he acquired the former Trafalgar Butter Factory and began collecting memorabilia and artefacts to tell the brand's full story. With the hard work of more than 60 volunteers, the not-for-profit museum has grown into one of Australia’s largest car museums, now welcoming over 10,000 visitors each year.
