The Smart Water Fund is an initiative of Victoria's water industry and the Victorian Government to invest in innovative solutions that will help create a water smart future for Victoria.

Up to $5 million is made available across two streams to encourage and support individuals, community groups, businesses, and research development institutions in developing innovative ideas for water conservation, water recycling, and sustainable biosolids management.

Gippsland Water recently facilitated a free information session to launch Round 5 of the Smart Water Fund. The launch, presented by Dale Alsford of the Smart Water Fund, was attended by business and community representatives from across the region.

Mr Alsford discussed the areas of funding available and provided some tips and advice on completing applications.

Gippsland Water's managing director John Mitchell said that local businesses and community groups are encouraged to submit an application, and advised that Gippsland Water will provide assistance for any person or business proposing to submit a Smart Water Fund application.

"The initiative is a great opportunity for Gippsland businesses and individuals alike to think about what they can do to continue to conserve and recycle water, particularly with Permanent Water Saving Rules and water restrictions currently in place across the region," Mr Mitchell said.

"We have already seen one successful application in our service area through the program, and there is potential for other businesses and community groups to receive assistance they need for their innovation."

Hanna Wash Australia based in Moe recently secured funding for a water saving initiative through Round 4 of the Smart Water Fund. The company will use its $100,000 grant to integrate three different car wash technologies into one system for water reuse in a self-serve car wash, which can assist in reducing water consumption within the car wash industry.

Approximately $20 million has been provided in the previous four rounds of the Smart Water Fund in supporting innovative sustainable water use projects. The fund will look more favourably on innovative projects that provide sustainability leadership in the community or industry.

The closing date for applications for Round 5 of the Smart Water Fund is 9 November 2007.
