Students weigh up the risks

Utilising a $2400 grant provided by the Department of Human Services, South Gippsland Shire Council has provided entertaining and educational Information sessions on immunisation to Grade 6 students across the shire.

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 15th December 2004 - Back to News

The sessions included footage of the impact of diseases such as polio on the world over the past sixty years, and the improvements that immunisation has created.

" We’ve targeted this age group in particular as they will be entering high school in the New Year when they will have the opportunity to be immunised against Hepatitis B in the February /March period," said Mr Tim De Vere, Council’s Immunisation Program Coordinator.

"By meeting with them at this time, we allow them ample space in a non threatening environment to ask questions about immunisation in general, with the result that many of their unfounded fears are allayed, " he added.

Hepatitis B requires two injections four to six months apart that will then protect most students for life.

"With a protection success rate of over 90%, there are very few parents or students who don’t see the sense in taking advantage of this opportunity, given that there is no cure for hepatitis B, a debilitating illness that can result in death," added Mr De Vere.

Information sessions have been held at primary schools in Leongatha, Korumburra, Loch, Poowong, Nyora, Welshpool, Foster Mirboo North, Tarwin Lower, Toora and Meeniyan.

For further information about immunisation phone Time or Irene on 5662 9362 during office hours.
