The forum was organised in response to an assessment conducted by council’s community development team regarding training and networking requirements for community groups.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora said that the aim of the workshop was to give community groups and non-profit organisations an opportunity to learn more about governance and how this applies in a community context.

"The workshop was well attended with 70 community group representatives taking part in the session. The workshop included the roles and responsibilities of committee members, managing conflicts and succession planning.

"Good governance is very important for community groups because it demonstrates that the group is responsive, prepared to move forward and take advantage of opportunities that arise. The group’s board or committee of management has responsibility for ensuring that the group’s protocols align with good governance practices.

"It was good to see this forum was so well attended, and that local community groups take their responsibilities seriously enough to want to learn more about making their organisations more transparent and accountable," Cr Zimora concluded.
