Latrobe City Council hosts second Community Conversation

Last night Latrobe City Council held the second of its community conversations on the community strengths based economic transition of the Latrobe Valley.

Over 100 community members attended, with the room filled with enthusiastic, motivated and innovative individuals all willing to share their ideas in a generous and collaborative way.

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan said Council was enormously humbled that again the room was filled and that the community was engaged in such a powerful way.

"Throughout the evening, each and every community member worked collaboratively, and willing to share, listen and discuss a range of initiatives.  It was a great example of our trust and faith in the collective strengths of our community," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"It is clear from last night that our community owns this issue, they want to be active partners - they want to have a voice.

"The community provided great feedback on Council’s document, 'A Strength Led Transition'. Most were delighted to see that some 70 per cent of work from the first Community Conversation could be identified in the document.

"We fundamentally believe that the community has the capacity to guide the transition.

"During the evening we spoke with former Lord Mayor of Newcastle John Tate, who reminded our community that if we work together, if we continue to collectively lobby and advocate for a respectful transition, and if we refuse to falter in the presence of the size of the task, then we can deliver the future Latrobe Valley that we aspire to."

At the end of the evening, participants were asked to envisage what the Latrobe Valley would look like in 10 years' time if the community-led transition was delivered.

"The feedback featured words including proud, vibrant, hope and possibility, generating the hashtag #welovelatrobe," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"'A Strength Led Transition' will be updated and continue to evolve as Council continues its conversation with the community."
