Latrobe Valley-based recruitment company Gippsland Business Support has won Business of the Year in the 2003 Federation Health Gippsland Business Awards.

Federation Health Chairperson David Blythman presented the winner’s trophy to Managing Director of Gippsland Business Support, Juli Halton, before a capacity crowd of 420 at a gala awards night at Traralgon’s Premiere Function Centre on Friday.

Gippsland Business Support now joins an honour roll of regional businesses that have won the prestigious award, including Kiel Industries, Jindi Cheese, Geo Eng and Valley Windows.

Gippsland Business Support was established by Juli Halton in 1994 to provide private recruitment services for regional businesses. It now employs five full-time staff and services companies from Pakenham to Bairnsdale.

Juli Halton said: ‘We have worked hard to create a culture of client service. Our clients come first. We are really excited about being able to demonstrate that we can provide solutions for our clients. This is a huge boost for our business’

The 2003 Federation Health Gippsland Business Awards drew unprecedented interest and record nominations from businesses across Gippsland, according to Chairperson Chris Buckingham.

"The quality of nominations this year was outstanding. This is a great sign that business in Gippsland is improving across the board," Mr Buckingham said.

"The breadth and quality of nominations demonstrate that businesses can thrive in a regional environment. The awards are a celebration of the great things that are happening in the Gippsland business community."

In a first for the Federation Health Gippsland Business Awards, two winners shared one of the category awards. Latrobe based Environmental Resources Australia and Wellington based K & C Fisheries were named joint winners in the Environment and Sustainable Business Practice category sponsored by Loy Yang Power. According to Mr Buckingham, judges could not separate the outstanding nominations from ERA (a company that recovers 8000 tonnes a year of sodium sulphate from waste produced in paper production that it on-sells to the detergent industry), and K&C Fisheries, which harvested more than 800 tonnes of carp for the European export and Australian domestic markets this year.

Mr Buckingham said the number of nominations from new businesses - the most on record – was a positive sign of economic regeneration.

He continued: "On behalf of the committee I would like to congratulate the winners, finalists and sponsors for their support of the Awards and encourage businesses who were not finalists or did not nominate this year to have a go next year."
