Council To Support Community Views On Public Phones

Bass Coast Shire Council will work with the community and Telstra Country Wide to provide feedback on local needs for public phones in the Shire.

Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, said the Council had not been made aware of any public phones earmarked for removal in Bass Coast.

"Telstra has assured us that Council and the community will be consulted before making any decision to close or relocate public phones is made," said Cr Goodwin.

Telstra has outlined five guidelines to assist communities concerned about the potential loss of payphone services:

  • Local government authorities have been and will continue to be proactively contacted with information about the company’s plans, as well as an invitation to provide feedback.
  • Telstra has placed on affected payphones a sticker notifying local communities of the potential change – this sticker will now be redesigned and improved to distinguish between potential relocations and removals, and to provide even more information about channels for participation in the decision-making process.
  • Telstra will continue to take into account changes in usage patterns, whether the technology used is new or obsolete, the cost of vandalism, the potential threat to public health and safety and other factors relevant to the decision.
  • Citizens concerned about the potential loss of services are invited to contact Telstra completing a feedback form at www.telstra.com.au/payphoneservices/contactus.htm; call 1800 011 433; or write to Payphone Siting Manager, Locked Bag 6658, Sydney, NSW, 1100.
  • Telstra will specifically take into account the response of local communities, including representations from local government, members of parliament and community groups.

Effective Police Response Through Triple 0

Local police have again reiterated how important it is to use the Triple 0 number in the case of an emergency. Sergeant Russ Fraser, from the Cowes Police Station said it was vital that people used the Triple 0 number.

"If you require police attendance at a situation, Triple 0 is the only place you need to call," said Sergent Fraser.

"People sometimes think that they will get a quicker response if they call direct to the local station.

"But there is a system in place and that system means that police response is based on Triple 0 calls.

"Each and every call to Triple 0 gets attended to," said Sergeant Fraser.

"A call to the local station will go through to an answering machine if the station is unattended and by the time the officers are back at the station to pick up the message, it may be too late."

In the case of an emergency, please ring Triple 0. Have as many details of the emergency as possible, particularly an address or street location. The Triple 0 service will then notify the relevant authorities who will attend as soon as possible.
