Council To Help Ensure Responsible Gaming

Bass Coast Shire Council will develop a Responsible Gaming Policy over the next 12 months, as part of their proposed Council Plan.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 23rd June 2006 - Back to News

The timely announcement arrived during Responsible Gambling Awareness Week, which runs from 19 to 25 June.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, said the Council was very conscious of where the Shire sat in terms of gaming losses and opportunities for the community to gamble.

"The Shire gaming losses for 2004-2005 were $707 per adult compared with $492 per adult in country Victoria.

"There are also currently 9.65 gaming machines per 1000 adults in the Bass Coast Shire, compared with 7 per 1000 adults in country Victoria.

"The development of a Responsible Gaming Policy will directly address these issues," affirmed Mr Bawden.

"Community consultation will also take place to ensure that community attitudes are reflected in this important step for the Shire," he continued.

Mr Bawden said that the Council also welcomed the State Government's consideration to return planning powers over new gaming machines to local councils.

"The move would be a sensible one," stated Mr Bawden, "It would mean the community that's affected by planning decisions regarding gaming machines would get to make the call on them."

Under the existing system, venues with less than a quarter of their floor space occupied by poker machines do not need planning permission for new machines.

Should the new system change, if venue operators want to move machines from one venue to another or install new machines, they will need Council approval. Other changes are also likely to be incorporated, should the proposal be approved by the Minister for Planning, Rob Hulls.
