Latrobe City Council will receive $13,442 to add new books to its collection in the lead up to next year’s Premiers’ Reading Challenge, Member for Morwell Russell Northe said today.

Mr Northe welcomed the new funding for Latrobe City Council from the 2013-14 $1 million Premiers’ Reading Challenge Book Fund.

"The Book Fund is an excellent initiative which has helped to increase participation in reading," Mr Northe said.

"This funding will also give our students the opportunity to develop and expand upon their reading and literacy skills which will assist them throughout their lives.

"I congratulate Latrobe City on receiving this funding, and look forward to hearing some positive stories coming from our community members and local libraries."

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said that this funding would go a long way towards creating happy readers in Latrobe City.

"This funding can be put towards stocking our library shelves with new books and we can encourage all young people to take up the chance to join the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. There’s comfort and adventure to be found in climbing into the world of a story and reading is a foundation for learning. And we want our young people not only to learn but to have the enjoyment of the delights of reading!" Cr Gibson said.

Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell said the Victorian Coalition Government was determined to encourage more children to read, to read more, and to read more widely.

"The $1 million 2013-2014 allocation from the Premiers’ Reading Challenge Book Fund provides a wonderful boost to library stocks, for the benefit of the young readers of Victoria," Mrs Powell said.

Mrs Powell said more than 231,000 young people participated last year and together they read over four million books.

"From Dr Seuss, Roald Dahl, Mem Fox and Graeme Base to J K Rowling and Paul Jennings, there’s already something to challenge and delight young people of all ages, with more to come following the latest Premiers’ Reading Challenge Book Fund allocation," Mrs Powell said.

"Victoria has a world class public library network and the Victorian Government is intent on improving library services and facilities across the state.

"The four-year $4.5 million Premiers’ Reading Challenge Book Fund complements government’s $17.2 million Living Libraries Infrastructure Fund, and the $38.6 million Public Libraries Funding Program for 2013-14."
