Latrobe City Council, in conjunction with the Department of Business and Innovation, has been active in supporting local businesses to transition to a low carbon economy.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that several local businesses had recently participated in the New Horizons Leadership and Decision Making program.

"The program, hosted by Andrew Dunning of Balmattum Management, worked with five businesses located in Latrobe City. The focus of the program was for participants to assess their current leadership and decision making processes, and how these processes could be improved in the current business climate.

"We know that some businesses are feeling uncertain about what the predicted changes in the region will mean for their business and need assistance from programs such as this. Being able to provide such support is a vital part of our role as the region moves to transition," Cr Vermeulen said.

Peter Ceeney of Gippsland Trade Printers said that his company had been working hard to identify and develop leadership from the existing staff base.

"We saw the New Horizons Program as a tool with which to help us in this endeavour. Both the training on offer and the people involved were of the highest class. It was a fantastic idea to run a program grouping businesses of similar operations and sizing, but different industries and markets.

"Under these conditions, we get benefits not only from the tailor- made training package, but also from the sharing of the knowledge and experiences presented by other participants. It turned out to be a very worthwhile exercise," Mr Ceeney said.

A further workshop, a ‘Grow your Business’ program, scheduled for May is also designed to help local businesses plan how to respond to local market and industry changes and the transition to a low carbon economy.

This program, facilitated by Gippsland business consultancy Aerium, and funded and supported by the Department of Business and Innovation will involve a series of interactive workshops and one-on-one coaching sessions.

Cr Vermeulen said that it would provide a framework to help businesses identify immediate business risks and opportunities, and more importantly plan to address or capitalise on them.

"Understanding the market, the costs, implementing good business practices and having a plan are essential for achieving business success. If we look at great businesses, they all have a plan to guide them

"Latrobe City Council is committed to supporting local businesses. We see this program as just one way in which we can continue to provide that support," Cr Vermeulen said.

Places on this program are strictly limited and applications to participate are now open until close of business Monday 23 April 2012.
