Council signs up to GOGRAD employment drive

Wellington Shire is further expanding its employment support for young people, having now signed up to a significant new state-wide recruitment initiative aimed at attracting more high calibre university graduates to careers in local government

By Wellington Shire Council - 17th March 2004 - Back to News

GOGRAD, the Victorian Local Government Graduate Program, has just been launched and will be promoted at careers fairs around Victoria. It has been developed jointly by the Municipal Association of Victoria, councils and the LGPro (Local Government Professionals) body representing human resources professionals, to help address a shortage of staff in key local government areas.

The first vacancy Wellington is looking fill through the scheme is that for an Environmental Health Officer.

Said the Shire’s Mayor John Jago: "GOGRAD is an exciting initiative that will be significant in helping councils such as Wellington to attract and retain good staff, by raising awareness of local government and its attractiveness as career proposition for talented graduates.

"Presently there is a real shortage of staff and skills in key local government areas such as planning, environmental health and engineering and this graduate program represents a positive step towards overcoming this shortage. It will help to build on the valuable contribution being made by the interns, trainees and apprentices we are presently employing and assisting to develop specialist skills.

"Working for a council is a challenging and rewarding experience because your work has a direct impact on people’s real lives."

GOGRAD provides training and development sessions, structured ongoing assistance and a peer support network to encourage and help university students in their consideration of council job opportunities.

Anyone who would like more information on the GOGRAD program should visit the web site www.gograd.com.au or contact Glenys Harding in Human Resources at Wellington Shire Council on 03 5142 3322.
