Bass Coast Shire Council

Bass Coast Shire Council

Last week Bass Coast Shire Council hosted a reception to recognise the significant contribution our local paid and unpaid education leaders make to the community.

According to Bass Coast Mayor, Cr John Duscher, attendees included school council presidents, CEOs of training organisations, school teachers and representatives from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

"Guest speaker, Phil Egan, engaged and challenged the audience to think about the importance of students learning the full history of Australia, including the history prior to the arrival of European settlers," said Cr Duscher.

"Phil was able to share his research and experience as Senior Lecturer of Indigenous Studies at Melbourne University, with the attendees from local schools.

"As a past player with the Richmond Football Club, Phil entertained us with anectdotes from his footballing days and also about his childhood where his passion for learning began."

The education reception coincided with Reconciliation Week, which was a fitting tribute as indigenous culture was the topic of the night.

"Phil took us out of our comfort zone in a non threatening way and made us question why there is such a huge chunk of Australian history missing from our school curriculums," explained Cr Duscher.

Council will make the education reception an annual event with a new guest speaker each year discussing topics affecting the education sector.
