Latrobe City’s Community Plan: Have your say

Latrobe City Council has invited community input to formulate a ‘Community Plan’ which will be used to guide Latrobe City’s hand in local government matters.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 21st July 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said the consultative stage gave everyone in the community the opportunity to have a say in bettering their community and deciding what the key priorities for local government should be.

"Council’s vision is for a vibrant, liveable sustainable community but to give that idea life we need to harness community opinion," Cr Middlemiss said.

"The specific aim of the Community Plan is to address community health and wellbeing but these are subject to a myriad of influences. Together we need to identify the main issues that need attention or enhancing, and then work out the detail that will take us all in the desired direction."

"The Plan needs to establish just what should be done, by whom and when. Naturally, different people will have different ideas and priorities. Latrobe City is interested in receiving input from all community members," Cr Middlemiss said.

"Some citizens may be concerned about the accessibility of public transport, street appearance, facilities for older people and curtailing anti-social behaviour; others may view recycling, sustainability, woodland preservation and pollution as top priorities; whilst families may be more interested in education and childcare facilities, parks, gardens and playgrounds, and shopping facilities," Cr Middlemiss explained.

"Your ideas may be for the long term or be immediate solutions to identified problems; they may require council’s action or may need input from a particular group in the community," Cr Middlemiss said.

Latrobe City’s Community Plan Project Officer, Jenny Tame said that there were four categories into which each idea would be put.

"The first category is the physical environment or infrastructure and buildings, as well as use of the land and development issues. Then there is the social environment which is how we encourage the people to participate in their community, for example with clubs and sports and other activities.

The economic environment is about trying to provide employment opportunities for residents whilst finally, the natural environment is about taking care of our environment so that it can continue to thrive and in turn support us," Ms Tame explained.

"We will look at the ideas given to Council and slot them into the appropriate category. We just need the community to put their thinking caps on and try to come up with the ideas in the first place. We try to look at getting the maximum effect from every dollar spent, not just a benefit for one small part of the community at the expense of another," Ms Tame said.

Ms Tame suggested that getting a group together to discuss ideas, or finding out what your neighbours, friends, family or club associates think about issues may be as good a place as any to start.

"Business networks and other interest groups are also invited to contribute. No one is excluded. The main thing to remember is that we are all citizens of Latrobe and everybody is equal in terms of deserving good health and wellbeing," Ms Tame concluded.

If you want to be involved in the Community Plan, further information is available on the Council’s website (www.latrobe.vic.gov.au). Click on ‘For Residents’ and then ‘Community Plan’. There are suggested questions to answer and an appendix of issues which may be useful starting points to a discussion.

Open Community Plan forums will be held in each of Moe, Morwell and Traralgon in the week beginning Monday, 25th August, 2003. These will be held at the Moe Town Hall foyer, Morwell's Italian Australian Club and Traralgon's Council Rooms respectively, commencing 6.30pm for 7pm. A two hour brainstorming session is envisaged in which we hope to lay down the framework for a community blueprint for the future.

The contact officer, Jenny Tame will be pleased to receive your ideas. Phone 1300 367 700, write (Latrobe City Council, PO Box 345, Traralgon) or email (jennyta@latrobe.vic.gov.au). Inputs are being sought now until mid October when a draft document will be written, circulated for comment and final write-up completed in December.
