Latrobe City Council has joined a national local government effort to aid international relief in the wake of the tsunami disaster that has ravaged our Asian neighbours.

Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, also urged residents to give generously to aid agencies involved in tsunami disaster relief work.

"Many municipalities throughout Victoria are answering the call for financial assistance to help bring relief to the millions of people affected by this terrible disaster. Latrobe City has pledged a donation of $10,000 to Australian Red Cross, which is undertaking disaster relief work on a massive scale across the affected region," Cr Lougheed said.

"This is a disaster of such magnitude that it demands a response from the whole spectrum of the community; at all levels of government, across organisations whether commercial or community business orientated, and from individuals.

"The tragic end to the past year has already been met with a terrific display of generosity from all around the world, and numerous people are still seeking ways to contribute.

A number of appeals can be donated to via the Australian Giving Centre, which is a secure online donation facility administered by ‘Our Community’, with support from Westpac Bank.

A link to the Australian Giving Centre now appears on Council’s website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.

"Residents of Latrobe City can be assured that their donations will reach those most in need by clicking on the ‘Donate Here’ image now on our website," Cr Lougheed said.

‘Our Community’ takes no commission or fee for this service and ensures 100% of donations reaches the group of the donator's choice (less normal bank fees).

Tsunami appeals registered with the Australian Giving Centre so far include Oxfam Community Aid Abroad, Save the Children Fund, CARE Australia, International Women’s Development Agency, United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Australia International Needs (Australia) and Habitat for Humanity.

Council will also facilitate in-person donations for the Australian Red Cross Asia Quake and Tsunami Appeal. Collection tins are located at Latrobe City’s service centres, leisure centres, and libraries.

Donations to the Australian Red Cross Asia Quake and Tsunami Appeal requiring a tax receipt can be made at any branch of the Commonwealth Bank.

Cr Lougheed said Council was investigating a number of other ways to help victims of the tsunami.

"We are currently exploring the idea of an appeal concert in Latrobe City, and we hope to be able to make an announcement on the matter in a few days time," Cr Lougheed said.

"A number of citizens have approached Council with their concerns for those who have suffered. There is a sustained belief that we as a community can make a very real difference to the lives of the survivors, and Council will do all it can to help the community deliver its aid," Cr Lougheed added.
