Council’s Centenary House contribution recognised

Latrobe City Council’s contribution to the Gippsland Rotary Centenary House project was formally recognised on Thursday, with Council and committee members meeting on-site to discuss progress on the care facility.

Gippsland Rotary Centenary House, a Rotary Centenary initiative of Gippsland Rotary Clubs, will be a community owned accommodation facility, to accommodate Gippsland patients and their families attending the new Cancer Care Centre and the Latrobe Regional Hospital.

Council purchased the 2.1 hectare site last year, to facilitate construction of Centenary House and additional parking at the Latrobe Regional Hospital. Following public consultation, Latrobe City has entered into a twenty-five year lease agreement with the Gippsland Rotary Centenary House Project Committee of Management.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said the terms of the lease agreement provided the land for Centenary House at a peppercorn rental of one-dollar a year.

"The result is that a huge cost hurdle for the Centenary House project committee has been negated, and the committee is able to concentrate on the task of acquiring the necessary funds for the construction of the facility itself," Mr Buckley said.

"Council believes that its contribution towards the Centenary House project through the peppercorn rental lease agreement is a very practical way of providing support for this excellent project, which will help numerous cancer patients and their relatives.

"By providing temporary accommodation for them adjacent to the Latrobe Regional Hospital, while cancer treatment is provided through the new Gippsland Cancer Care Centre, we are helping make a difficult episode in their lives, far less traumatic," Mr Buckley said.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, congratulated the Gippsland Rotary Centenary House Project Committee of Management on their initiatives to date.

"We all know how severely members of our own community have been affected by cancer over the years, and many of us are in the position where a close friend or relative has been affected.

"Unfortunately, the incidence of cancer related illness is particularly high in this region and this has been recognised by governments at a local, state and federal level," Cr Lougheed said.

"The provision of a cancer treatment facility at the Latrobe Regional Hospital goes a long way towards coming to terms with the extent of the affects of cancer on our community, but the Centenary House project goes beyond just the recognition that a medical facility is needed, and the provision of that facility.

"The Centenary House project recognises that by providing affordable and comfortable accommodation near the Latrobe Regional Hospital for those undertaking treatment for cancer and their carers, some of the burden for those affected can be eased and the road to recovery made easier," Cr Lougheed said.

"It should be recognised that Council’s contribution to this project is a contribution being made on behalf of all of our community. I am sure the whole community joins me in acknowledging the vital role Centenary House will play.

"However, it’s important that the community realises that a great deal more needs to be provided through financial support to see this project through to completion, and as a consequence, will continue to give generously," Cr Lougheed added.
