Draft Latrobe 2026 Document Released For Consultation

The draft of Latrobe 2026: The Community Vision for Latrobe Valley is a long-term community vision developed through in-depth consultation with the local community and stakeholders.

By Latrobe City Council - 23rd March 2010 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that Latrobe 2026 clearly defined the aspirations that local residents held for the future of the region, by exploring aspects those residents most valued and those they would most like to change about life in the Latrobe Valley.

"The community vision was generated after identifying three broad concepts shared by the Latrobe Valley community – liveability, sustainability and leadership. To achieve these three concepts a range of actions will need to be taken by many agencies, organisations, groups and individuals.

"A further nine objectives are identified as part of the Latrobe 2026 community vision to take the Latrobe Valley forward. These objectives are economy, natural environment, built environment, our community, culture, recreation, governance, advocacy and partnerships, regulation and accountability," Cr O’Callaghan said.

Latrobe’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said that a clear community vision gives direction to organisations such as the council in terms of where attention and resources should be concentrated to address concerns and ensure aspirations are met.

"Such a vision is most important in times of uncertainty, and we live in interesting times at the moment. The impacts of climate change and the development and implementation of federal climate change policies targeted at reducing carbon emissions, will have an impact on the future of our City and the Gippsland region. It is our joint responsibility to ensure that we prepare for such changes and implement strategies to ensure we are able to address the challenges and make the most of the opportunities that such changes present," Mr Buckley said.

"At the ordinary meeting on Tuesday 9 March 2010, council resolved to release the draft of Latrobe 2026 to the public for further community and stakeholder consultation.

"Through this process we would like to confirm the vision sufficiently reflects the views and aspirations of the community and would hope to encourage collective support and shared responsibility for the many departments, agencies, organisations, groups and individuals that have the ability to make a positive contribution towards the achievement of the community vision," Mr Buckley explained.

"To this end, we would strongly encourage any individual or organisation with an interest in helping developing the vision as a shared aspiration for our future should read the draft and is invited to make a submission," Mr Buckley concluded.

Members of the public are invited to make a submission on the draft community vision up until 5pm on Wednesday 14 April 2010.

Council will consider any written submissions in relation to the draft of Latrobe 2026: The Community Vision for Latrobe Valley at the ordinary meeting of council on Monday 3 May 2010, commencing 7pm in the Nambur Wariga Meeting Room, Latrobe City Council corporate headquarters, Morwell.

Submissions should be addressed to The Chief Executive Officer, Latrobe City Council, PO Box 264 Morwell VIC 3840.

Any person requiring further information concerning the draft of Latrobe 2026: The Community Vision for Latrobe Valley should contact Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700.
