A Win For East Gippsland Farmers

East Gippsland Shire has responded to calls from local farmers and reintroduced a farm differential rate of 5 per cent in its 2004/05 Budget.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 29th July 2004 - Back to News

The Shire’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Kozlowski said the Council, in adopting the rating strategy for 2004/05, had acknowledged submissions that were made to the Rating Discussion Paper late last year.

"The paper culminated in a number of submissions being received and in particular, addressed those issues that were raised by the farming sector," Mr Kozlowski said.

"Those issues predominantly related to the cessation of the farm differential back in 2002, when it was phased out."

Mr Kozlowski said that before setting its rating strategy for this year’s Budget, Council considered the impact of the general property revaluation and its long-term financial plan.

"The Budget, which was adopted on Wednesday, July 28, highlights a 5 per cent rating differential to be reintroduced for the farming sector. With the combined effect of the property revaluation, it means that the farming sector will pay 19 per cent less in total rate revenue than it did in 2003-04 financial year," Mr Kozlowski said.

"It’s good news for farmers in that the sector has strongly advocated on behalf of its constituents to recognise the difference between farming properties and the operations of farming compared to residential properties within the rest of the Shire. By reintroducing the farm differential, that distinction has been re-established."
