Wellington Shire Council will be implementing a Concrete Recycling Program from 1 July, to convert thousands of tonnes of old waste concrete deposited at Kilmany Landfill into a material suitable for road bases and drainage bedding around the Shire.

This environmentally-friendly and economically efficient initiative will free-up landfill space, help reduce the Council’s road maintenance costs, and provide it with valuable income from the sale of some of the material on the open market.

Wellington is working closely with recycling experts from the Alex Fraser Group on the project, along with the Gippsland Regional Waste Management Group.

Any reusable concrete, reinforced concrete and bricks arriving at Kilmany Landfill will be stockpiled to one side, with specialist equipment brought in periodically to crush the material to a size suitable for its new lease of life. The aim is for no more concrete to be placed in landfill itself.

Said Wellington’s acting Mayor Lorraine MacGillivray: "This is a great recycling initiative that forms part of our long term sustainability drive for the Shire and reaps valuable rewards for the environment, the community and the Council.

"We are committed to resource recovery and recycling, and this is an example of how working closely with specialists in the field and the local community can bring very worthwhile results.

"It’s great to see waste concrete, which would otherwise have been buried in landfill, being re-used in this very useful way to benefit the Shire’s roads."

Executive Officer for the Gippsland Regional Waste Management Group, Kevin Flett, said: "This shows that Wellington Shire Council is committed to resource recovery and increasing recycling opportunities in their community."
