Excitement Builds For Tour Of Gippsland

Hot on the wheels of Lance Armstrong’s stunning seventh Tour de France triumph, comes another cycling extravaganza – our own Tour of Gippsland, a nine-stage event that takes in the picturesque coastal arm of Wellington Shire.

By Wellington Shire Council - 1st August 2005 - Back to News

The five-day tour will be held from August 3–7 and takes in four municipalities – Wellington, La Trobe, South Gippsland and Baw Baw.

More than 100 cyclists are expected to contest the 524km tour, which starts with a 45km criterium in Moe on Wednesday, August 3, and finishes with a 57km street race in Traralgon on Sunday, August 7.

The tour moves into Wellington on the third day, Thursday, 4 August, when riders will race 80km from Traralgon to Port Albert during Stage 3 of the tour between 10am and noon. Stage 4 starts a few hours later at 2.30pm when riders cycle 59km from Seaspray to Loch Sport.

Other stages will be held in scenic areas such as: Walhalla, Tarra Valley and Wilsons Promontory.

The Tour of Gippsland will be the opening event in a new concept in Australian cycling – three five-day tours, which will form the $90,000 2005 Tattersall’s Cup series.

The other two stages of the Tattersall’s Cup, in Tasmania and the Murray River region, will be held at the end of August and early September.

Two of Australia’s best cyclists, Barcelona Olympian Robert McLachlan and 2004 Herald Sun Tour runner-up David McKenzie, will be participating in the event.

McKenzie, who holds the modern-day record of 11 Herald Sun Tour stage victories, said: "Gippsland’s great terrain will produce tough racing. It has all the makings of a magnificent event - but it won’t be easy."

Wellington Mayor Peter Gault said: "The Tour of Gippsland is a great example of four regional municipalities working together to put Gippsland on the map.

"As well as providing an economic boost to the region during the tour, we are hopeful the Tour will promote the many attributes of Gippsland to a wide audience," he said.

Meanwhile, Latrobe City is holding a free Family Fun Day to coincide with the finish of the event on Sunday 7 August opposite the Civic Centre in Kay Street,

Traralgon.

The WIN Television Community Bike Ride starts at 11.30am. All riders need to register before the ride, and registrations are open from 10.30am. Riders can choose to do one or multiple circuits of the course.

All riders in the WIN Television Community Bike Ride will also be automatically entered into a draw to win a bicycle and there will be lots of activities for children, food stalls and entertainment for the whole family on the day.
