Start planting and get pruning – Latrobe City Council is launching its inaugural garden competition and is looking for the best gardens across the municipality.

Latrobe City’s mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter, said all Latrobe City residents, schools, community groups and businesses could enter the competition - excluding private residents who have had their garden developed and maintained by a professional gardener.

"There are 11 categories and it’s free to enter. All entries will be judged by a panel of three judges, including a horticulture professional and one community representative."

"You don’t have to have the largest garden or the most extravagant – there are categories for the best small garden and the best vegetable garden. The Sustainability Award will go to a garden that produces a minimal environmental footprint, which might be demonstrated by using locally-sourced or recycled materials and low-level water requirements through plant choice, mulching and rainwater collection."

"The garden that receives the highest overall score will receive the Mayor’s Award, based on criteria such as choosing plants that give year-round interest, the health of those plants and the overall design and appearance.

"Don’t be dismayed if you don’t have a garden at home - there are also categories for best business and school gardens, as well as the best community garden or reserve."

Cr Rossiter said maintaining a thriving garden took a lot of time and care and that dedication deserved to be recognised.

"We want to celebrate the achievements of community members who take pride in their gardens. Their hard work improves the amenity of our towns and helps make this municipality a better place to live, work and play."

Cr Rossiter said the competition, which Council will be seeking sponsorship for, was developed in response to overwhelming community pride in its green assets

"Be it a school garden, community garden or a neighbourhood food oasis lovingly tendered by a local resident – all bring us joy and are often the subject of collective admiration.

"I hope this inaugural competition will be embraced by the community and supported by businesses, so it can continue for many years to come," Cr Rossiter concluded.

Entries open Monday, 8 August and close Friday, 14 October.

Judging will be held between Monday 17 October and Friday, 4 November and winners will be announced in late November.
