Seeking community feedback on Road Management Plan

Wellington Shire Council is keen to receive the community’s feedback on its draft Road Management Plan, which will determine the level of work that the council can be expected to carry out on all the roads it has responsibility for.

By Wellington Shire Council - 18th August 2004 - Back to News

The shire is responsible for 1,800 sealed and unsealed public roads (listed in its recently compiled Register of Public Roads), which taken together cover more than 3,350 kms - greater than the distance from Melbourne to Perth. Other roads including arterial roads, private streets and tracks in state parks are managed by other road authorities such as VicRoads, DSE and corporate bodies.

The draft Road Management Plan has been drawn up to comply with the Road Management Act 2004 and categorises the council’s level of responsibility over each of its 1,800 public roads according to priority and community need. This will determine whether a road warrants an inspection, or greater attention such as maintenance or repair work.

Maintenance and repair work to roads and bridges is a major financial commitment costing the council and ratepayers some $5 million this financial year alone. With this in mind the community’s input on the draft is especially important.

A copy of the draft is available for viewing at the council’s Sale and Yarram service centres, as well as on its website www.wellington.vic.gov.au

Alternatively contact the shire on 1300 366 244 for a copy.

Feedback needs to be submitted in writing by 22 September, 2004 to: Chief Executive Officer, Wellington Shire Council, PO Box 506, Sale, Vic 3850.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "As the State’s third largest shire by area, with a population of just 40,000 people, a massive road network and many other demands on our financial resources, it’s clear that the Road Management Plan will have far-reaching implications for us and our community.

"The task to maintain all these roads at a defined level is massive, let alone to be able to respond to calls for upgrading that are constantly received. We have a responsibility to ensure ratepayers’ money is allocated wisely to roads and bridges according to our capacity and to priority and community need. That is why we are encouraging the community to take this opportunity to view the draft Road Management Plan and to feedback their thoughts, which will be considered before the final plan is adopted by the council."

The council is expected to adopt the Road Management Plan in Spring 2004.
