The presentation was made in the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre, in the theatre bearing his name. It included the presentation of an illuminated address highlighting his outstanding and enduring contribution over the years in the fields of: health and aged care; education; administration and governance; arts and crafts; music and theatre; sport and recreation.

Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault, who made the presentation said: "John Leslie is a truly exceptional philanthropic contributor to the communities of Sale and Wellington Shire.

"Industry and commerce play a very important part in ensuring the prosperity of a community. However, every bit as significant to ensuring a well-balanced, strong and healthy citizenry is the successful promotion and cultivation of its cultural attributes and the arts.

"I don’t think I’m overstating it when I say that John Leslie has been instrumental, through his great acts of generosity and his expertise, in making sure that culture and the arts are protected and thrive in Wellington.

"We’re delighted to be able to formally recognise everything he has done for the community by bestowing one of the highest honours that we can on a fellow citizen, namely the Key to the City of Sale, in the theatre that bears his name."
