Latrobe City takes out Local Government Employer award

Latrobe City Council has been awarded the ‘Local Government Employer’ award in the inaugural Wurreker awards, which recognise achievements in training for indigenous people and strengthening partnerships between community and main-stream services.

Latrobe City’s Indigenous Employment Co-ordinator, Joanne Brunt, accepted the award on behalf of Latrobe City. Ms Brunt has coordinated the Indigenous Employment program facilitated by Latrobe City, which initially aimed to provide more than 40 traineeships over three years for indigenous people throughout Gippsland. To date, 55 traineeships have been placed in the last twelve months.

Ms Brunt said the program had been built on the success of an earlier program established in 2001, which employed 12 Indigenous trainees within Latrobe City Council.

"The current program has provided opportunities for Koories in administration, childcare, painting and decorating, building and construction, hairdressing, cabinet making, horticulture and health – to name a few.

"A key to the success of the program has been the provision of cross-cultural training packages to employers in the region in partnership with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations; and mentoring support to both employees and employers," Ms Brunt explained.

Ms Brunt said the Indigenous Traineeship program had enabled the Indigenous community to choose a pathway towards a career opportunity of their choice.

"It has now become a proven and powerful tool to increase Indigenous employment and career development, and I am extremely proud of the program which has had a positive impact within our community and the wider community, Ms Brunt said.

In congratulating Ms Brunt on the award, Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the program had set a lead for other municipalities to follow, and it reflected Latrobe City’s own steps towards recognition and Reconciliation with indigenous people.

"Not only is Latrobe City Council the leader in local government state-wide, but we have recently been recognised and highly commended nationally, as an organisation that champions excellence and leadership in diversity.

"It is Council’s firm belief that promotion of the opportunities experienced through programs such as this, acts as a catalyst to encourage others along the road to Reconciliation," Cr White said.
