By East Gippsland Shire Council - 27th October 2004 - Back to News

At their bi-weekly meeting, Councillors were presented with a report that recommended agreement to the project management tasks required to allow completion of the EES in line with Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) requirements.

Council also approved a further $50,000 for the project from within the Shire’s 2004/05 operating budget.

The EES requires detailed examination of the social, environmental and economic impacts of the proposed upgrade as well as the impacts and consequences of not proceeding to upgrade the existing facilities.

The study will include the examination of terrestrial, marine and intertidal flora and fauna, safety and risk, archaeology and heritage, social and recreational Impacts, traffic and noise, landscape and economic valuation.

Shire CEO Steve Kozlowski said that consultants would soon be appointed to complete the study.

"The Draft Assessment Guidelines that are currently on exhibition with DSE will allow the preparation of the consultant’s brief that will permit tendering to take place," he said.

"It is highly likely that the coastal processes study and the Assessment Guidelines will be finalised before the end of the year."

Mr Kozlowski said that as well as Council’s contribution, $55,0000 will come from the Commonwealth Government’s Sustainable Regions Program and a further $15,000 from Tourism Victoria to fund the Stage 2 study.

"Council has recognised that the provision of upgraded ocean access at Mallacoota was an important project to the local community," he said.
