Mallacoota Ocean Access Boat Ramp Environment Effects Statement Process Commences

East Gippsland Shire Council has committed to the planning process of an Environmental Effects Statement (EES) as an approval requirement prior to the building of a boat ramp at Bastion Point, Mallacoota.

This process has been determined by the Minister for Planning as a necessary component of the project.

The EES process allows all stakeholders to make comment and to provide input into the process. The successful conclusion of the EES is a vital element in the project that will provide Mallacoota with a new Boat Ramp at Bastion Point.

The first stage of the EES process will examine the effect of the building of ramp structures on coastal processes, wave climates and sand movements at the three locations selected for possible future development at Bastion Point. Tender documents for this component of the EES are being prepared and will be issued by early August.

In announcing the formation of a Steering Committee to assist the East Gippsland Shire bring this Project to a successful conclusion, the Shire’s Chief Executive Office, Steve Kozlowski said "This is a significant project for the East Gippsland Shire, the Mallacoota community and the Shire in general and Council is committed to work with the Steering Committee and the community of Mallacoota to determine the feasibility of this important project.

Councillor Michael Freshwater will chair the Steering Committee. Other members of the Committee will represent the Shire, the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Tourism Victoria and local residents Ian Lewis and John Rudge of the Mallacoota Ocean Access Committee.

The Shire, with the assistance of the Steering Committee, has appointed Mr Don Healy of Laysell Pty Ltd, to manage the EES process on behalf of Council. In announcing the appointment Councillor Freshwater stated that Don Healy is experienced in working with the communities and other stakeholders to resolving complex projects.

The Steering Committee is planning to hold its August meeting in Mallacoota in order to inform all stakeholders of progress at that time. Details of the meeting will be advised at a later date.
