Shire supports wetland protection with new program

Wellington Shire Council is offering financial incentives to landholders to encourage effective management of wetlands on private property under its latest environmental drive - the Wetlands Protection Program.

By Wellington Shire Council - 19th August 2004 - Back to News

This new initiative is a partnership between the council, West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, Landcare and Trust for Nature, and provides financial incentives and assistance to landholders who wish to embark on management and rehabilitation measures on their property including fencing, revegetation, weed control efforts and conservation covenants.

The program will also inform community members about the importance of appropriate management of wetlands through a network of contacts, awareness campaigns and supporting literature.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "The council has demonstrated considerable commitment to conserving and protecting the environment and this program will undoubtedly assist landholders to better manage wetlands on their property. It will encourage the protection of these vital areas in our shire now and well into the future, improving the health of rivers, biodiversity and water quality, while at the same tiem benefiting farming productivity."

The first round of applications closes on 25 October 2004. For further information about Wellington Shire Council’s Wetlands Protection Program contact Colleen Murphy, Environmental Planner on 1300 366 244.
