Council Decides On Enhanced Hard Waste Service

Latrobe City Council will introduce an enhanced hard waste service providing opportunities for the community to take advantage of a no charge drop off days at transfer stations and low cost pick up collections.

By Latrobe City Council - 27th April 2009 - Back to News

The enhanced service approved by council on Monday night is based on the interim hard waste collection service council introduced in August last year.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the enhanced service would meet the needs of the community while keeping streetscapes free of unsightly ‘discards’ and addressing today’s occupational health and safety expectations.

"As of 1 July this year, council will provide two booked hard waste collection services to residents in Latrobe City. This low cost service will be provided at a cost of $20, or just $10 for residents eligible for healthcare cards.

"Council will also hold two ‘no charge’ hard waste weekends for residents to drop-off waste at their local transfer station.

"In addition to these hard waste opportunities, residents will also continue to be provided with the two no charge green waste drop off weekends," Cr Price said.

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said that in reaching its decision on a hard waste service, council reviewed the current legislative requirements as well as the latest Work Safe handbook titled ‘A Guide to the Safe Collection of Hard Waste’.

"The usage of the current system was also analysed to develop an approach to hard waste collection that minimises the risk to contractors carrying out the work and targets those in the community who have few means to transport hard waste to an appropriate disposal location," Mr Buckley explained.

"We feel that the resulting approach puts council and its contractors in a relatively low risk situation in complying with specific guidelines for the provision of a hard waste service. We also feel that this service gives the community a cost efficient service tailored to their needs."

Mr Buckley said that council was also mindful of the popularity of the ‘no charge’ hard waste drop off week-end provided in December 2008.

"Council intends to offer another ‘no-charge’ weekend later in this financial year to allow residents to drop-off hard waste they wish to dispose of. Details of this opportunity will be advertised closer to the date of the event," Mr Buckley said.

Latrobe City manager natural environment sustainability, Matthew Peake, said that while the response to the December event was quite overwhelming, the no charge weekend also identified that much of the material could have been deposited by residents at Latrobe City transfer stations free of charge at any time during the year.

"Residents should be aware that there are no charges at all for old washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, bicycle frames, car parts, corrugated iron roofing or any other item made from steel, brass, copper or aluminium," Mr Peake explained.

"Each transfer station in Moe Morwell and Traralgon also has a facility for residents to deposit used engine oil free of charge.

"Other items that should never be placed in the standard household garbage bins such as old paint tins, car and household batteries, gas cylinders and old fluorescent tubes can also be deposited free of charge. However, these items need to be deposited at the 'Detox your home collection point' located at the Morwell Transfer Station," Mr Peake added.

"In introducing this enhanced service, council is also determined to ensure the community is kept well informed of hard waste and other waste disposal and recycling opportunities, to support the waste services calendar distributed in the latter half of last year.

"Already scheduled on the calendar for later this year is the next hard waste collection service to be held in November 2009. Those wishing to take advantage of this low cost service can already make a booking by contacting Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700," Mr Peake added.

Copies of the Latrobe City’s waste services calendar are available from council’s service centres or from Peter Collins, telephone 5128 5337.
