Latrobe City Council welcomes Shadow Cabinet visit

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan took the opportunity to highlight the transition challenges facing the Latrobe City community this year, during her welcoming of the Victorian Coalition Shadow Cabinet to Latrobe.

"It was an important opportunity to highlight our key asks to the Shadow Cabinet and to gain their support for Council’s Strength Led Transition," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Council has not been shy in advocating for its three key asks of decentralisation, rail infrastructure and stage three upgrades Latrobe Regional Hospital.

"Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and his coalition colleagues are supportive of a whole of government approach to regionalising population growth and taking pressure off Melbourne and its infrastructure.

"Clearly there are some synergies between the drivers in the Strength Led Transition document and a focus on regularising our population.

"The key focus of our discussions with Government and the Opposition has been around decentralisation. It is an economic development leaver that the Government could activate at any time – all that stands in the way is the political will to do so.

"Decentralisation has the opportunity to do three key things.  The first is to convey the government’s long term commitment to the economic future of Latrobe City. Second, to provide an immediate increase to the local economy; and thirdly provide a much needed skills based aspiration for our young people. Connecting education to meaningful jobs is vitally important.

"A reliable, connected and frequent rail service is at the heart of all our thriving communities. And at the least, Latrobe City is advocating to achieve parity with our regional counterparts - to remove the divide between the Gippsland region and the rest of Victoria.

"Shockingly, travelling by train in Gippsland is slower than it was 10 years ago, the offering to community has declined, and our services are irregular, unreliable and failing to support our regional economy.

"Our third ask, the completion of the LRH master plan, offers an opportunity to deliver real jobs to the municipality.

"Connection to and alignment with education offerings and Federation University ensures that retraining opportunities are available immediately.  Important skills growth combined with a capacity to inspire and generate a significant boost to the health economy makes this a valuable transition proposition."
