Latrobe City Assists Displaced East Gippsland Residents
Support escalated with the opening of an Emergency Relief Centre at the Morwell Recreation Reserve, Travers Street Morwell.
Our fellow Gippslanders in East Gippsland are experiencing an emergency on a scale that we have never seen before.
Latrobe City Council has been providing practical support to assist East Gippsland Shire during the bushfire emergency.
This support has been escalated with the opening of an Emergency Relief Centre at the Morwell Recreation Reserve, Travers Street Morwell.
Latrobe City Council has been working to help those who have left their homes and have no-where else to go, by setting up the Emergency Relief Centre and providing immediate support.
Latrobe City Council Mayor, Cr Dan Clancey noted that many in the community had been touched by the events of past days.
"Our thoughts are with all these affected communities along with the emergency services personnel, volunteers and support crews," Mayor Clancey said.
"As the broader Gippsland region comes to understand the impacts and the needs of the East Gippsland community and visitors, we are only too happy to do our bit, pitch in and help out by providing staff to assist in East Gippsland at their relief centres and by opening up an Emergency Relief Centre in Morwell.
"The Emergency Relief Centre is available for those people who have left East Gippsland and has ample parking for long vehicles. We encourage those with caravans, motorhomes and the like to first check local caravan parks for vacancies."
At this stage the centre is not open to residents of Latrobe City due to there being no active emergency situation in the municipality.
Latrobe City residents are reminded that during the current conditions the Vic Emergency website, Vic Emergency app and local radio should be your source of information for all bushfire warnings.
