Bass Coast Shire Council’s CEO, Allan Bawden and Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin met with Assistant Police Commissioner, Paul Evans this week.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th May 2007 - Back to News

The meeting was called by Council in response to concerns regarding the level of Police resources in Bass Coast.

In particular, the meeting focused on the lack of Police during busy periods including holidays, Easter and long weekends.

Council’s CEO Allan Bawden said the meeting proved extremely useful as Mr Evans was able to explain the reasons why current Police numbers are low.

"At the present time, staffing levels within the Police Force are not full due to vacancies and staff being on sick leave.

"Mr Evans stated that Bass Coast is the highest priority in his region and that he’s committed an additional four positions for the Phillip Island and San Remo area," advised Mr Bawden.

Mr Bawden and Cr Goodwin reinforced to Mr Evans the importance of Police presence with the significant population increase during major events, long weekends and holidays.

"Police services need to respond to increased visitor numbers in Bass Coast," said Mr Bawden.

"We thank Assistant Commissioner Evans for the briefing and would like to acknowledge the very positive working relationship we have with Victoria Police."

Assistant Police Commissioner, Paul Evans is responsible for region five for Victoria, which includes all of the Melbourne’s South Eastern Suburbs and Gippsland.

VOLUNTEERS WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD

Bass Coast Shire Council will pay tribute to its volunteers that help run the Shire’s Visitor Information Centres during National Volunteers Week next week.

There will be a morning tea on Wednesday May 16, where Council’s Visitors Service Manager, Peter Francis will acknowledge the ongoing work contributed by the volunteers.

"Three of the four Centres across the Shire are run predominantly by volunteers, with support from Council staff," said Mr Francis.

"The volunteers do a terrific job providing information, booking accommodation, selling tickets for attractions and helping holiday makers get the most from their stay.

"Without the thousands of hours that the volunteers contribute every year, the Visitor Information Centres could not provide the comprehensive service that they do," said Mr Francis.

This will have been the busiest year ever for Visitor Information Centres, with over 200,000 visitors expected to have passed through the doors this financial year.

The Shire’s Visitor Information Centres are open every day of the year apart from Christmas Day, with the exception of the Centre in Newhaven which opens Christmas Day afternoon.

"People volunteer for many different reasons: to meet new people, maintain and learn new skills, to keep busy or because they are passionate about the region and want to help others enjoy it too," added Mr Francis.

If you are interested in volunteering at the Inverloch, Wonthaggi, Newhaven or Cowes Visitor Information Centres contact Peter Francis on 5951 3316 to find out more.
