Mayor Welcomes Roads

East Gippsland Shire Mayor, Harvey Bates, has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of a four-year extension to the Roads to Recovery Program.

"Our Council, along with other Councils throughout Australia, lobbied strongly to seek further funding - this has paid off and we’re delighted," Cr Bates said.

"Council’s next task is to continue to lobby by providing a ‘wish-list’ of roads and infrastructure in need of repair or replacement.

"We’ve got a huge network of roads in our Shire and it’s no secret that many of them need urgent attention.

"Having a solid network of roads and bridges is vital not only for road safety, but also economic development particularly in industries such as transport, timber and agriculture.

"We will strongly push our case for a fair slice of the funding available," Cr Bates said.

On Thursday the Federal Government announced a four-year $2 billion extension to the successful Roads to Recovery Program and other transport infrastructure, particularly in regional Australia.

A total of $1.2 billion ($300,000 million a year) will be allocated for Roads to Recovery over four years - $200 million a year will be provided for local roads and $100,000 a year for local transport infrastructure projects of strategic regional importance.

The Roads to Recovery Program will fund urban and regional roads and other land transport infrastructure that is the responsibility of Councils, not State Government roads.

The Federal Government will work with the Australian Local Government Association and other interested parties in the coming months to refine the new program and establish priorities.

Municipal Association of Victoria President, Brad Matheson, said Roads to Recovery funding previously provided has been instrumental in widening and reconstructing crumbling roads, building new bridges and improving road safety.

"This program has been the most successful direct partnership between Federal and Local Government in recent years, with the $250 million already provided to Victorian Councils significantly reducing the rate of road decline," he said.

"It is particularly pleasing that two thirds of the renewed Roads to Recovery model will continue to provide vital road funding to all 79 Councils using the existing formula."
