Gippsland Councils help local businesses address skills shortage

Wellington Shire & other Gippsland Councils are keen to hear from local businesses experiencing difficulties recruiting & retaining skilled staff so that they can seek assistance from the State Government’s Skilled Migration Unit to fill vacancies

By Wellington Shire Council - 7th October 2003 - Back to News

The Unit has agreed to work with the Councils to match up prospective skilled migrants to Victoria with identified positions.

Businesses are invited to get in touch with their local Economic Development Officer and discuss areas where this opportunity may help overcome existing or anticipated deficiencies in their workforce. The contact for Wellington Shire Council is Tim Wills on 5142 3355.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "This key initiative is a direct response to employment needs highlighted by businesses attending the Revitalising Gippsland Forum at Monash University’s Churchill campus earlier this year.

"Although our first aim is to fill employment vacancies from the local labour pool, we are aware that many businesses are simply not able to attract and or keep some skilled employees in Gippsland. So we need to look at other possibilities including suitable migrants from overseas.

"This is a potential quick-fix to address an immediate labour shortage. We are also keen to work with local training organisations to see how longer term solutions might be developed."
