marking the first United Nations World Diabetes Day.

Like the world’s landmark buildings, the Corporate Centre will be bathed in blue light on Wednesday night, 14 November to mark Diabetes Day.

In December 2006 The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution that recognised diabetes as "a chronic, debilitating and costly disease associated with major complications that pose severe risks for families, countries and the entire world".

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2007 is Diabetes in Children and Adolescents.

Mayor, Cr Mendy Urie said she was pleased to join the global efforts to draw the dangers of the disease to the attention of the local community.

She said that type 2 diabetes was increasingly being diagnosed as more children and adolescents were becoming overweight and inactive.

"While diabetes is one of the most easily contracted diseases it is also one of the most easily avoided," she said.

"In many cases It can be prevented just by maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active."

Cr Urie said the Shire was setting an example by introducing a health and wellbeing program for its staff.

"We are encouraging and facilitating healthier work practices, improved diet and exercise," she said.

"Also from mid 2008 we will ban smoking on any part of Council properties and we will also provide counselling assistance to those who need it to improve their health."
