Show Pride In Your Community On Clean Up Australia Day

Latrobe City Council is calling on all citizens to show support for their local environment by taking part in Clean Up Australia Day

Latrobe City Council is calling on all citizens to show support for their local environment by taking part in Clean Up Australia Day activities on Sunday 2 March. The day will provide individuals and groups with the chance to clean up favourite areas and help the local environment by removing rubbish and waste from streets, lakes and roadsides.

Clean Up Australia Day provides an opportunity for people to show respect for their community by helping to keep it a tidy place that people are proud to live in. By helping to clean up local areas around Australia individuals can remove harmful litter that pollutes the environment and can be sure that they are helping Australia and their own town or city to remain healthy and clean.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, said that Clean Up Australia Day is a great way for citizens to show their support for the community and to learn about the damage that is caused when people litter.

"By cleaning up Latrobe, citizens show that they care for their community and the people who live in it. Removing waste and rubbish that is dumped throughout the municipality not only helps Latrobe to look tidy but also ensures the local environment thrives and flourishes," Cr Hanning said.

"Removing rubbish in many cases also reduces fire hazards, a lesson that is extremely important to take to heart in a dangerous wildfire year like the present.

"We want Latrobe to be beautiful and healthy, and removing the waste that poisons our surroundings will guarantee this. People that participate in Clean Up Australia Day recognise the damage done when litter is thrown onto streets, into lakes and onto highways and do something positive to help the situation.

"The day is very educational as it draws attention to littering problems Australia-wide and helps educate others in the community that littering is unsociable," Cr Hanning explained.

"Of course, it would be far better if there were no need for Clean Up Australia Day. Most of the rubbish in that litters our environment could be avoided if more care were taken. In some instances there is deliberate dumping of rubbish in the environment such as on roadsides, on public land or in our forests. Council always welcomes reports of anyone observed dumping rubbish, and will not hesitate to prosecute where possible," Cr Hanning added.

"Clean Up Australia Day is a great way for all citizens, new or old, young or elderly, to show enthusiasm for their environs. Simply join one of the groups at the advertised collection sites," Cr Hanning urged.
