Council Seeks Community Comment On Potential Cprs Impacts

Latrobe City Council has released its ‘Draft Policy Position on the Expected Local Impacts of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme’ (CPRS) for community consultation.

By Latrobe City Council - 24th November 2009 - Back to News

Mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that the release of the policy position was consistent with council’s commitment to provide strong community leadership around the issue of the CPRS.

"Council has drafted a document which details its assessment of the potential impacts of the CPRS.

"We are now seeking to test this with the whole community – all sectors including residents and ratepayers, industry and business, the health and education sectors, unions, community groups and clubs etc.

"This is an opportunity for community members to tell us how they think the CPRS will affect the Latrobe community.

"Some of the questions include asking members of the community what they feel are the strengths of Latrobe City Council’s draft CPRS policy position.

"We’re also interested in any gaps or weaknesses and those priorities that members of the community would like to see highlighted," said Cr Price.

"Our key goal is to develop a policy position from which we can advocate and lobby the State and Federal Government.

"Partnerships with the community, industry and government stakeholders will be the critical success factor and we encourage all community members to review this document and have their say."

Cr Price said that community consultation around the draft policy document was essential.

"We want the community to be able to own this document, to connect to it and to have an opportunity to shape it.

"The CPRS has the potential to impact every Latrobe City resident in a variety of ways.

"Information, engagement and cooperation at this juncture in time, is more important to the future of this community than ever before."

Copies of the Latrobe City Council Draft Policy Position on the Local Impacts of the CPRS are available on the Latrobe City Council website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au or hard copies are available at council’s service centres in Churchill, Moe, Morwell and Traralgon.

The key aspects of the draft policy position include analysis and an action plan for eight themes that underpin the proposed policy role for Latrobe City Council. These are:

· Regional Leadership and Strategic Partnerships;

· Engagement with Government;

· Community Education and Capacity Building

· Enhancement of the Latrobe City Profile

· Sustainable Use of Natural Resources;

· Enhancement of Latrobe City Infrastructure and Services;

· Expansion and Growth of Industry Base; and

· Contingency Planning.

Feedback to Latrobe City Council should be provided by 14 December 2009.
