Hawkeye to eye off our roads

Bass Coast Shire Council has commissioned the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) to undertake a major survey of the main roads across the Shire to assess their condition.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th August 2005 - Back to News

Council’s Assets Director, Guy Wilson-Browne, says the survey will provide a much more up-to-date and consistent picture of road condition than has previously existed.

"Council will use the information to plan its future maintenance and renewal programs and allocate funds where they are most needed.

"This will ensure that ratepayers’ funds are being spent as cost effectively as possible," he said.

ARRB will use a specialist Hawkeye vehicle to survey almost 1,000 kilometres of road, which will take about 25 days.

"The vehicle is able to travel at highway speeds, which means much less disruption to traffic compared to traditional data collection methods and a safer work environment for staff," advised Mr Wilson-Browne.

The Hawkeye uses thirteen lasers to measure road roughness, rutting and texture (ie. where there is low skid resistance), which are all key factors of road condition.

In addition, four cameras capture the footpath condition and roadside features. The images from Hawkeye can be used to identify and locate assets such as signs, guide posts, culverts and guardrails and to assess their condition and maintenance needs.

In using ARRB, Bass Coast joins over 60 Councils Australia wide in gaining a more accurate picture of its assets
