Council Gets Award For Buying Green

Bass Coast Shire Council has been awarded an ECO-Buy Special Achievement Rural/Regional Award in recognition of its spending on green products to improve the environment.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 8th May 2007 - Back to News

Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden confirmed today that the Council bought 10.4% more green products in 2005/06 than the previous year as part of its commitment to a cleaner, greener environment.

"We are keen to demonstrate our leadership in responding to climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting new end markets for materials collected through Council’s kerbside recycling service.

"As we learn about the wide range of green products available and the benefits they can bring our community, we are becoming even more enthusiastic about buying green.

"Over the past financial year, Bass Coast Shire Council spent $997,979 on all green products," Mr Bawden continued

"This included $374,663 on recycled products, $269,335 on greenhouse friendly products, $45,146 on water saving products and $308,834 on re-use products (such as mulch).

"For every person who lives in the Shire, we spend $33.92 on green products."

Mr Bawden said that ‘buying green’ focused on purchasing and using recycled, energy efficient, water saving and less toxic products.

"We are buying products made from recycled materials, such as brochures and newsletters made from recycled paper, signs made from recycled plastic and rubber paving made from tyres, because this helps ‘close the loop’ on recycling.

"These days, there are hundreds of different recycled products available, with local councils purchasing 469 different types of green products in the past year.

"The ECO-Buy program also includes energy and water efficient products like compact fluorescent light globes, efficient office equipment, fuel efficient vehicles, water-saving taps and showerheads, as they all make sense in both environmental and financial terms.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s green buying results are included in the annual report released by ECO-Buy, Australia’s leading green purchasing program.

The ECO-Buy program works with Victorian Councils to increase their purchasing of recycled, greenhouse friendly and environmentally preferred products.

ECO-Buy has produced Australia’s most comprehensive, free online database of green products and suppliers: www.ecobuy.org.au/ecofind

Bass Coast Shire Council has been a member of ECO-Buy since 2000 and also received an ECO-Buy Award in 2004.

ECO-Buy is supported by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), Sustainability Victoria and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE).
