City welcomes Living Libraries grant

Latrobe City Council has welcomed the state government’s announcement of a Living Libraries grant that will be used to enhance Traralgon’s new library.

The Traralgon library is being relocated into the civic precinct in Traralgon, where the building is being refurbished to accommodate a library four times the size of the current facility.

Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said that while Council had already allocated funding for the library relocation, the application for funding through the state government’s Living Libraries program had been made to ensure the library could be furbished as a state-of-the-art facility.

"This is great news, as we can now provide a library that is not only in larger and more workable premises, but comes with a standard of facilities that a modern library should aim for," Cr Lougheed said.

"We have held off on calling for tenders for the work on the new library until now, awaiting the outcome of the state government’s consideration of our Living Libraries funding application. It needs to be acknowledged that our local member, Brendan Jenkins, has lobbied hard to facilitate an early decision by the Minister, and we are delighted that decision has now been announced and we can now proceed with the tender process," Cr Lougheed said.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that following the consideration of tenders, work on the redevelopment of the complex would begin, and the work would be completed in the second half of the year.

"The former administration centre in the civic precinct will undergo a major refurbishment to house the new library which is being collocated with Council’s Traralgon service centre. This is a very exciting project for the Traralgon community.

"The plan for the new facility incorporates significant improvements, including study areas and a lounge area for casual reading. Access to the collection will be enhanced with lower shelf heights and more space between aisles.

"The role of libraries has changed dramatically in the last few years particularly in respect to the forms of electronic media that are now available through the collections. Libraries also now play an important role in providing communities with access to the internet and databases that are essential for research and for fulfilling the needs of modern day education.

"With the relocation of the Traralgon library to the civic precinct and the refurbishment of the former administrative building, comes the opportunity to ensure the Traralgon facility is able to deliver those aspects of technology that influence the libraries of today and are likely to become more and more important to the libraries of tomorrow," Mr Buckley said.

The relocation of the Traralgon library to the civic precinct also provides opportunities for future enhancement of service delivery in community education and information provision by utilising the adjacent function rooms and Council Chamber," Mr Buckley added.
