Council rejects accusations on ousting of service clubs

Latrobe City Council has rejected accusations that it is forcing service clubs to move from land in Hickox Street associated with the current animal pound and depot in Traralgon, saying the accusations are uninformed and totally false.

The claims were made by the Traralgon Branch of the ALP on Monday.

Latrobe City’s Manager City Relations, Mark Brady, said that Council had neither the authority nor motivation to require the service clubs to move.

"The land in question is ‘crown land’ and as such the land is under the control of the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE)," Mr Brady explained.

"As a result of a Council resolution passed in February, we have written to the service clubs located on the Hickox Street land, identifying that Council intends to relocate its animal pound and depot to a new site in Rocla Road in the foreseeable future. In that letter we invited the service clubs to discuss with Council any issues or concerns that they may have about their future in Hickox Street due to this relocation.

"Essentially, DSE will be calling the shots as far as tenure over the land is concerned. From our discussions with DSE, we understand they have no intention of asking the service clubs to leave Hickox Street; but we have contacted the service clubs so that if they have concerns about the future, they can be reassured we will do everything in our power to help them relocate, if and whenever this might be required.

"This is an extremely responsible and reasonable course of action for the Council to take. It is a clear indication that we are not going to leave service clubs in the lurch should they be required by DSE to find another home at some stage in the future," Mr Brady said.

"It is disappointing that Council should be wrongly criticised over a strategy that has the welfare of the service clubs in Hickox Street very much at heart. To imply that this strategy is somehow an attempt to force service clubs from crown land is a total fabrication," Mr Brady added.
