Latrobe City Redesignated As An International Safe Community

Latrobe City Council has received reaccreditation under the World Health Organization’s International Safer Communities program.

By Latrobe City - 12th October 2011 - Back to News

This is the 16th year that Latrobe City has been accredited. The municipality was first accredited in 1996 as Latrobe Shire and was number 15 on the list of members and at the forefront of this movement. Today, there are 254 members around the world.

The redesignation ceremony was held during the Community Safety and Wellbeing Forum held at the Churchill Hotel on Wednesday 12 October.

Latrobe City’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said the reaccreditation process was testament to the collaborative nature of the application for reaccrediation.

"Latrobe City works with many community agencies to run safety and health and wellbeing programs and initiatives that reach out to people from all age groups, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds.

"There has continued to be significant investment by the local community and groups, including the Council, local health and wellbeing service providers, local business and government departments which have contributed to the success in promoting safer communities," Cr White explained.

"There are many community safety champions within these agencies and community groups who have added significantly to this success and their efforts are acknowledged in the importance that community partnerships play in making our community a safer place in which to live, play, work and learn.

"I think it is also important to acknowledge that community safety is a shared responsibility. Whilst Latrobe City works closely with residents, service providers and government departments to ensure that the right people receive the right program at the right time, the wider community is also doing its job by working together to promote our area as a safe region.

"Receiving this redesignation is a sure sign that the community can be assured that Latrobe City has a continuing commitment to their safety, security, health and wellbeing on an ongoing basis. We all play a very important role in helping to create a Latrobe City culture in our community that is safe, connected and proud," Cr White concluded.
