The aim of the day is to plant 3000 native trees, grasses and shrubs along Eel Hole Creek to improve biodiversity, stabilse the edge of the creek and help offset vehicle emissions.

Environment planner, Michelle Hutchins, said that undertaking plantings along the eastern edge of the creek will help protect and enhance the remnant vegetation and stabilise the creek bank. "The Gippsland plains grassy woodland and swamp scrub vegetation communities that are found along this section of Eel Hole Creek are now classified as endangered. It has also been confimed that some of the remnant trees found along the creek are Strzelecki Gums (Eucalyptus strzeleckii) which are a nationally threatened species," Michelle explained.

Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Tony Zimora, said the whole community is invited and participants in the community tree planting day will have the chance to help the Strzelecki Gum population by planting seedlings along the creek edge. "As well as improving the biodiversity of the area, the planting day will have the added benefit of offsetting carbon emissions," Cr Zimora said.

Cr Zimora said that the day will also concincide with the launch of Latrobe City Council’s new community tree-planting trailer. "The trailer is a ‘Greening Latrobe’ initiative to increase the resources available to the community to help with projects aimed at protecting native bushland and revegetating cleared areas in Latrobe," Cr Zimora explained.

"The tree planting trailer can be loaned by community groups and individuals who are running native vegetation revegetation projects in Latrobe City. The trailer is fitted out with tree planting equipment including Hamilton tree planters, buckets, mattocks and gloves, as well as having a water tank.

"The day is being supported by council’s ‘Green Expectations’ arts project which has commissioned an artist to paint the new trailer which will reflect the Greening Latrobe revegetation theme," Cr Zimora added.

Ms Hutchins said the day will also include a live roving performance from ‘Born in a Taxi’ who are working with local actors to develop a street based performance as part of the Green Expectations project.

"The group will be dressed as 18th century moving garden landscapes and will also be providing entertainment to tree planters at lunchtime," Ms Hutchins revealed.

"This alone should be great incentive to attend the day as their performances are renowned for being funny, interactive and exploit a love of the absurd, which will be great fun for everyone!

"The Lake Wellington Landcare Network information trailer will also be there which has lots of information on land management within the Gippsland region. A free barbecue lunch will be provided for all particpants at midday. Meet at the Churchill Skate Park in Churchill from 10am to join in the fun!" Ms Hutchins added.
