Shires join forces for food safety

As part of its ongoing commitment to food safety Wellington Shire Council has teamed up with fellow Gippsland shires in a new initiative to investigate and address food safety issues.

By Wellington Shire Council - 18th March 2004 - Back to News

The Gippsland Regional Food Surveillance Committee comprises Wellington, Baw Baw, Latrobe City, South and East Gippsland shires and will pursue any regionally significant food safety issues - conducting investigations and implementing actions to address potential health hazards.

Most recently the committee completed its first investigation into water quality at registered food premises with private water supplies, to check for compliance with National Food Safety Standards introduced last year. Samples were taken and analysed and guidelines have been prepared and forwarded to premise proprietors advising on the best ways to collect, store and treat private water supplies that are used in association with food preparation.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "Water quality in private supplies used in registered food premises is vital for our residents, as rural and remoter areas throughout Victoria often rely on alternative sources of water including tanks, rivers, streams and bores."

Further information about the work of the committee can be obtained from Wellington Shire Council’s Environmental Health Coordinator, Alan Watson on 1300 366 244.
