Community feedback wanted for skate park and pump tracks by Bass Coast Shire Council
The community will help shape the future of skate parks and pump tracks in Bass Coast, with residents asked to get involved at upcoming engagement sessions or by completing an online survey.
Bass Coast Shire Council is seeking community feedback and insights on its Skate Park Strategy Review. Council is also seeking community input about pump tracks, including suitable sites and assessing demand for the future provision of pump tracks in the municipality. Community members who may be keen to be part of the pump track steering committee can register their interest by completing the survey.
The community feedback will be reviewed and help identify on improvement of the final plan which will be presented to council in early 2023
Cowes SkatePark redevelopment
The Skate Park Strategy Review, undertaken by skate consultancy PLAYCE, has identified the need to develop Sub-Regional skate facilities for Wonthaggi and Cowes as well as a new local level facility for Grayden Reserve in Newhaven to replace the existing portable ramp.
Since 2018, council has undertaken major works of its skate park facilities with the redevelopment of the Cowes Skate Park, new skate parks at Corinella and Grantville and renewal works at Wonthaggi and Inverloch. Construction of a new local level skate park in Kilcunda is due to start in early 2023.
Seeking feedback on review
Bass Coast Mayor Michael Whelan said skate parks were an important recreation option for young people in Bass Coast and the council was investigating ways to improve them and potentially expand its offerings to also include pump tracks. "Bass Coast Shire Council has invested heavily in recreation facilities for our young people, including a number of new and revamped skate parks over the past five years."
"Council continually receives community requests for pump tracks and we are excited to establish a steering committee to investigate the viability of pump tracks in the area, and help determine appropriate locations and possible designs for the tracks."
"We are seeking feedback on the Skate Park Strategy Review and expressions of interest from anyone who may be interested in helping to guide our investigations into pump track provision in Bass Coast." Cr Whelan said.
Future plans for skateparks
As part of the community consultation, council officers will be on-site at several skate parks to discuss future plans with interested users and community members.
- Wonthaggi SkatePark - Thursday, 19 January from 11am to 12pm
- Graydens Reserve - Thursday, 19 January from 1pm to 2pm
- Cowes SkatePark - Thursday, 19 January from 3pm to 4pm
Community members can provide feedback via a short online survey by visiting SkatePark Strategy review page or in writing to recreation@basscoast.vic.gov.au or PO Box 118, Wonthaggi 3995. Submissions must be received by midnight on Friday, 3 February. Feedback will be used to inform the final Skate Park Strategy Review document, which aims to provide council with a clear pathway to provide skate parks for the growing Bass Coast community.
