Safety Risk Forces Tree Removal

Latrobe City Council arborists have acted quickly to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.

By Latrobe City - 18th November 2010 - Back to News

A large Golden Elm Tree has been removed from Victory Park, Traralgon, after it split down the centre of the trunk. Plans have already been made to replace the Golden Elm with a 6-metre advanced tree.

A member of the public alerted Council arborists of the potential hazard after they heard a creaking noise coming from the tree in Victory Park.

Latrobe City’s acting manager infrastructure operations, Jody O’Kane, explained that, upon further inspection, the arborists discovered the tree had developed dry rot.

"The dry rot to the centre of the trunk made the tree significantly weaker, which forced Council to remove it urgently. Dry rot is a fungus that destroys wood.

"Latrobe City is committed to maintaining the natural environment and would not remove trees in such a fashion unless there are extenuating circumstances, such as the high and immediate risk presented to public safety in this instance," Mr O’Kane said.

"Council’s usual process for planned tree removal involves extensive public consultation prior to taking action, as is evident with the Kay Street Tree Management Plan, and would not act hastily unless there was due cause," Mr O’Kane concluded.
