New Bushfire Prone Areas

Bass Coast Shire Council has named several areas within the Shire as Bushfire Prone areas to provide residents of those areas with greater protection from tragedy in the future.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th August 2005 - Back to News

Council’s Building Services Manager, Stephen Rosendale, said that Council and the CFA had worked together to identify areas most prone to bushfires.

"There are a number of bushland areas which are becoming increasingly popular for residential living, which has heightened the need to ensure that houses are suitably protected from potential bushfires.

"There has been plenty of devastation from bushfires to warrant the need for houses in such areas to be built in compliance with Bushfire Prone Area standards.

"Housing designs in these areas will need to provide a minimum level of fire protection relevant to their surrounding environment," Mr Rosendale said.

The Bushfire Prone Areas named include bushland or outlying areas of Grantville, West Creek, Cape Paterson, Pound Creek, Harmers Haven to Lower Powlett, Cape Woolamai, Rhyll, Newhaven and Cowes West.

Houses in these areas will need to be designed in accordance with AS3959 "Construction of Buildings in Bushfire Prone Areas".

Full details of the new requirements are available from Council’s Building team on (03) 5671 2211 or (03) 5951 3311.

A detailed site map showing where the Bushfire Prone Areas are located is available on the Bass Coast Shire Council website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au and at all Council offices.
