Mayor urges householders to get rid of nasties

Latrobe City Council and EcoRecycle Victoria are encouraging residents to make their homes safer by taking advantage of a free opportunity to rid their homes of unwanted household chemicals this Saturday.

The free Household Chemical Collection will be held in Morwell at the Council Depot, Driffield Road, on Saturday 4 September between 1pm and 4pm.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said householders are being urged to check cupboards under the sink, the bathroom, the garden shed and the garage to locate chemical wastes and bring them to the collection day.

"This is a great opportunity to make the family home safer by discarding unwanted products in a responsible manner that might otherwise cause injury," Cr White said.

"All too frequently we hear of instances where babies or young children have gained access to harmful household chemicals that have been inadequately stored. This is a great opportunity to reduce the risk of those events happening, by disposing of harmful products no longer needed, and evaluating the safe storage of those that still serve a purpose," Cr White said.

Among the types of unwanted household chemicals accepted for safe disposal are:

  • Household chemicals such as aerosol cans, insect sprays, pest poisons, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals, mothballs and old smoke detectors.
  • Garden chemicals such as fertilisers, fungicides, herbicides and insecticides.
  • Automotive chemicals such as transmission fluids, batteries and battery acid, brake fluid, car wax solvent, fuels (such as petrol, diesel, kerosene) and oils (including motor and sump oils).
  • Workshop chemicals including paint strippers, solvent-based glues, water and oil-based paints, paint thinner, acetone, turpentine, varnish and wood preservative.

Other unwanted chemicals from the home and garden accepted are acids and alkalis, artists’ paints and supplies, photographic chemicals, fibreglass resins (not mixed), extinguishers, gas cylinders, safety ammunition, swimming pool chemicals and mercury batteries.

Residents can bring as many items as they wish to the collection site. However, please ensure that no one item exceeds 20 litres or 20 kilograms.

For safe handling of household and garden chemicals, place liquids in a tray so any spills are contained, powders and solids should be securely packed and, where possible, label the contents of each item.

Items that cannot be accepted are chemicals not used for household purposes, such as farm and industrial chemicals. Do not bring these items to the household chemical collection.
