Lake Guyatt interpretive trail set to open

Wellington Shire Council will be officially opening the new Gunai/Kurnai Aboriginal Peoples’ Wetlands Interpretive Art Trail at Lake Guyatt in Sale on 1 July.

By Wellington Shire Council - 17th June 2005 - Back to News

This project – made possible through a $9,000 grant from the Australia Council for the Arts – will see the installation of ten impressive 1.2 metre, double-sided paintings around the walking track at the lake.

The artworks were produced by two Wellington-based Gurnai/Kurnai artists, Wilma Pepper and Daryl McKay, who were commissioned by the council to produce images depicting contemporary and traditional aboriginal styles with flora and fauna themes.

This latest initiative ties in with the award-winning Lake Guthridge/Guyatt Environmental Playspace.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "This is an innovative addition to what is already a great recreational asset in our shire and will provide an aesthetically pleasing depiction of our surrounds. We have been delighted to have had the opportunity to work with two very talented local artists to make this project possible, and appreciate the Federal Government’s contribution to make it happen."
